Very Cold Gas and Dark Matter

چکیده
We have recently proposed a new candidate for baryonic dark matter: very cold molecular gas, in near-isothermal equilibrium with the cosmic background radiation at 2.73 K. The cold gas, of quasi-primordial abundances, is condensed in a fractal structure, resembling the hierarchical structure of the detected interstellar medium. We present some perspectives of detecting this very cold gas, either directly or indirectly. The H 2 molecule has an " ultrafine " structure, due to the interaction between the rotation-induced magnetic moment and the nuclear spins. But the lines fall in the km domain, and are very weak. The best opportunity might be the UV absorption of H 2 in front of quasars. The unexpected cold dust component, revealed by the COBE/FIRAS submilli-metric results, could also be due to this very cold H 2 gas, through collision-induced radiation, or solid H 2 grains or snowflakes. The γ-ray distribution, much more radially extended than the supernovae at the origin of cosmic rays acceleration, also points towards and extended gas distribution.

The Assembly of Galaxies in a Hierarchically Clustering Universe
We study the formation of galaxies by using N-body/hydrodynamics simulations to investigate how baryons collect at the centre of dark matter halos. We treat the dark matter as a collisionless uid and the baryons as an ideal gas. We include the eeects of gravity, pressure gradients, hydrodynamical shocks, and radiative energy losses, but we neglect star formation. Our initial conditions assume a...
متن کاملDark Matter in the Light of Cobe
The observations of all three COBE instruments are examined for the effects of dark matter. The anisotropy measured by the DMR, and especially the degreescale groundand balloon-based experiments, is only compatible with large-scale structure formation by gravity if the Universe is dominated by non-baryonic dark matter. The FIRAS instrument measures the total power radiated by cold dust, and thu...
متن کاملGas and Galaxy Formation
The theory of galaxy formation is reviewed briefly. From the evidence of clusters today, the primordial gas fraction was 20% or more. Thus, while the Universe is dominated by dark matter, gas plays an appreciable role in galaxy formation. Collapses of dwarf protogalaxies produce predominantly cold gas. It is argued that, in such cold collapses, the collapsed gas is largely self-gravitating. As ...
متن کاملWhy Are There Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies?
There appears to exist a conflict between the standard structure formation theory and the existence of the faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies in the Local Group. Theoretical considerations suggest that a cold dark matter universe has been a very hostile place for the formation of small galaxies. In particular, gas would not have been able to cool and condense to form stars inside dark matter halos...
متن کاملFractal Cold Gas as Dark Matter in Galaxies and Clusters
The conjecture that dark matter in galaxies is mostly cold fractal gas exposed in another paper at this conference is developed in the more general context of the thermodynamics of the ideal isothermal gas subject to gravitational instability. This simple gas model already contains the contrary ingredients able to prevent an asymptotic equilibrium: any growing gravothermal singularity evaporate...
